  The Department of the Germanic Languages and Their Teaching Methods 

  The Department of the Germanic Languages and Their Teaching Methods is a graduate chair which provides teaching of foreign languages (English, German, Latin) for linguistic and non-linguistic training programs and specializations for full time and part time training.

Improving the quality of educational services is the main task of organizing and implementing the process of foreign language teaching for special purposes which is aimed at developing the vocational and linguistic persona of the student. The emerging qualitative growth in the Department activity is reflected, first of all, in the implementation of modern technical means of education and their use in the teaching process, strengthening of material and technical base, considerable improvement in the methodology of the training process.

Lecturers, postgraduate students and students of the department regularly either participate in international and regional conferences or organize conferences and seminars at various levels. Seminars and conferences on the current problems of the language and its teaching methods are annually held for young scholars (linguists and methodologists), and round tables are held for university lecturers and school teachers. The main form of students’ scientific activity is research groups under the supervision of the leading professors of the Department.

At the international level, the Department of the Germanic Languages and Their Teaching Methods maintains scientific links with the Goethe-Institute (Germany), V.N. Karazin Kharkiv National University, Ion Creangă State Pedagogical University, the Alecu Russo State University of Bălți. In addition, the Department of the Germanic Languages and Their Teaching Methods cooperates with the Department of Education and Culture of the United States Department of State, the German Embassy, the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), and the Pedagogical Exchange Service (PAD), with the Robert Bosch Stiftung and the Austrian Consulate. Our partners offer various forms of professional development at conferences, seminars and presentations which are conducted by highly qualified methodologists, textbook authors and international examiners. The lecturers of the Department study modern methods and technologies of foreign language teaching, regularly attend methodological seminars organized by the Moldova English Teachers Association (META). Together with the teachers of the Rybnitsa schools, the faculty take part in the certificate series of webinars (Internet seminars) “Shaping The Way We Teach English”, as well as in the distance courses of the Institute of English of the Oregon State University, and the University of California, Berkeley. Students have the opportunity to visit Germany under the Volksbund summer camps program and get language practice.
In order to strengthen the dialogue between secondary education institutions and higher education institutions and to expand cooperation in educational and scientific activities, branches of the Department of German Languages and Their Teaching Methods were opened in the municipal educational institutions “Rybnitsa Russian Secondary School No. 10 with lyceum classes”, “Rybnitsa Russian Gymnasium No. 1”, “Rybnitsa Ukrainian Secondary School 1 with lyceum classes”. The department has created a Scientific Methodical Room which is stocked with literature, audio recordings, video films, dictionaries, maps.

The staff of the scientific methodical room carry out the work of fund-making in strict accordance with the room specificity, study plans and programs. They work on the filing and handing out of folders of seminars, special courses and training and methodology complexes to students.

The Department has opened a Professional Education Department where students and qualified specialists with higher vocational education receive additional qualification “Interpreter in the sphere of professional communication” (English/German). So far, 73 professionals have been trained at the Department of Vocational Training.

With a view to creating an additional educational environment for those studying in educational institutions of the Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic who are interested in linguistic training and acquiring in-depth knowledge of their native and foreign languages, to promote their intellectual potential development, to create the demand for further education and self-education, as well as to provide assistance in their professional identification, at the Department of the Germanic Languages and Their Teaching Methods at the Rybnitsa Branch of the PSU named after T.G. Shevchenko there was opened the distance linguistic school.
