OPEN LECTURE

On April 18, there was held an open lecture dedicated to the World Book and Copyright Day. The lecture was attended by the 1st year students, where the head of the library center, O.B. Ilchuk, spoke about the history of the foundation and the most important books in the history of mankind. World Book and Copyright Day aims to promote the book, welcomes reading and pays tribute to the book’s great role and to all writers.

The history of this holiday began in 1926, when King Alphonse XIII of Spain decreed the celebration of the national Book Day. Book and Copyright Day was established by UNESCO in 1995.

The book has always united humanity and spread everywhere. The role of the book is invaluable: it gives an idea of the history of civilization, it contains all the knowledge and experience accumulated by humanity, as well as all the hopes, dreams and pleasures that people need.

At the end of the lecture, Olga Ilchuk spoke about the Record Books: the largest book in the world is the Codex Gigas; the smallest book in the world is a copy of the New Testament; the longest one is the 27-volume novel “Men of Goodwill” by French writer Louis Henri Farigoule; the most expensive book is a notebook of scientific records created by Leonardo da Vinci in 1506-1510 that was sold in trading in 1994 to Bill Gates for $30.8 million.
