PIONEERING JAZZ VOICES

On October 19, a seminar “Pioneering Jazz Voices” with an American activist, lecturer on cultural issues, Doctor of Philosophy Marguerite Mariama was held at the Rybnytsa branch of the Pridnestrovian State University named after T.G. Shevchenko.

Marguerite traveled around the world as a member of a national and international big band and small ensemble as a jazz and blues stylist, led music projects in Singapore, Taiwan, Shanghai and China, and performed with “the greatest musicians on the planet”, including her mentor Jimmy Sigler, a music director of the great jazz singer Dinah Washington. Marguerite’s acting achievements are roles in films, advertising, printing, as well as theater performances, including the role of matriarch Madame Armfeldt in the musical “A Little Night Music”. She voiced the award-winning documentary “70 acres in Chicago: Cabrini Green” and contributed to “The Blues”, a blues music story created by Martin Scorsese as a 7-episode PBS television series. She also made a cameo appearance in the Chicago segment of “Godfathers and Sons”.

In her multimedia, interactive seminar and musical presentation, Dr. Mariama focused on how African-American cultural forms such as music, dance, theater, visual arts had changed the face of culture around the world. Participants of the event were presented with a historical and sociological overview of jazz and its predecessor – blues – the root of popular music. More than 100 students, schoolchildren and teaching staff attended the meeting.
